Assisted Care Unit (ACU) at a Glance

Our Assisted Care Unit combines advanced psychiatric treatment with additional physical assistance for patients who need more support while remaining actively engaged in their recovery.

Our ACU offers:

  • Secure and welcoming inpatient behavioral healthcare
  • 24-hour nursing care and psychiatric treatment
  • Assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) for patients who need extra support but are not bedbound
  • Individualized treatment plans designed to promote healing and recovery
  • Treatment for depression, anxiety, psychosis, hallucinations, mood disorders and other acute behavioral health conditions
  • Care for individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts, behavioral crises or worsening psychiatric symptoms
  • Care for patients who use walkers, wheelchairs or other approved mobility equipment
  • Accommodations for specialized medical equipment, including oxygen concentrators and bariatric wheelchairs, when arranged before admission
  • Compassionate communication and support for families throughout treatment
  • A multidisciplinary team focused on helping patients regain stability and improve quality of life

A Secure and Therapeutic Environment

Our Assisted Care Unit was designed specifically for adults who need behavioral healthcare while also requiring additional assistance with mobility or daily activities. Patients receive comprehensive psychiatric care from a team of psychiatrists, nurses, therapists, behavioral health technicians and other healthcare professionals working together to meet each person’s unique needs.

Treatment may include:

  • Comprehensive psychiatric evaluation
  • Medication management
  • Individual therapy
  • Group therapy
  • Daily nursing care
  • Assistance with activities of daily living
  • Family education and communication
  • Discharge planning and aftercare coordination

Every patient receives a personalized treatment plan that supports both their behavioral health and functional needs.

Who May Benefit From the Assisted Care Unit?

The Assisted Care Unit may be appropriate for adults experiencing:

  • Behaviors that are life-threatening, destructive or disabling to themselves or others
  • Suicidal thoughts, intent, plans or recent suicide attempts
  • Homicidal thoughts or viable plans
  • Psychiatric symptoms that interfere with treatment of a serious medical condition
  • Psychosis, delusions or significant disturbances in thinking
  • Worsening psychiatric symptoms that prevent safe functioning
  • Auditory, visual, tactile or command hallucinations
  • The need for medically monitored detoxification from alcohol or benzodiazepines, or monitoring for opioid withdrawal
  • Continued psychiatric instability despite outpatient treatment or a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Patients admitted to the Assisted Care Unit should be medically appropriate for inpatient psychiatric treatment and able to actively participate in the therapeutic treatment program.

Additional Support for Patients With Physical Care Needs

The ACU is specially equipped to care for patients who need additional physical assistance while receiving behavioral healthcare. Patients may include individuals who:

  • Need assistance with activities of daily living but are not bedbound
  • Use a walker or wheelchair
  • Require specialized equipment, such as an oxygen concentrator or bariatric wheelchair (please notify us prior to admission so accommodations can be prepared)
  • Perform self-straight catheterization and are able to bring their own supplies

For patients with cognitive impairment, including some forms of dementia, a SLUMS cognitive screening score of 21 or higher is generally required. Patients must also be able to meaningfully participate in therapeutic programming.
